It is seen that the 18th and 19th centuries were dominated by the writings of
European scholars i.e. the scholar-administrators of East India Company who were
the early pioneers of writing about Indian history. They were referred to as
Orientalists or Indologists. Influenced with the writings of the various travellers, they
became quite interested in exploring the cultural and social history of India.
with the foundation of the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1784, the study of art and
architecture, epigraphy, numismatics, archaeology became a focus of the scholars.
