It is seen that the 18th and 19th centuries were dominated by the writings of European scholars i.e. the scholar-administrators of East India Company who were the early pioneers of writing about Indian history. They were referred to as Orientalists or Indologists. Influenced with the writings of the various travellers, they became quite interested in exploring the cultural and social history of India. 1 Later on, with the foundation of the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1784, the study of art and architecture, epigraphy, numismatics, archaeology became a focus of the scholars.
