As the country’s development process threw up numerous and diverse problems that required extensive research and analysis, Government of India established a Committee for Social Science Research under the chairmanship of Professor V.K.R.V Rao in 1965 to review the social science research scenario in the country and make recommendations to accelerate its progress. This led to the establishment of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) in 1969, New Delhi. Prof. Bhushan Patwardhan is the chairman of ICSSR. It was setup to promote extensive research and fund in the field of social sciences in the country. It is provide grants for projects, fellowships, international collaboration, capacity building, survey, publications etc. to promote research in social sciences in India. The ICSSR is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India and a premier organisation with 6 Regional Centres,(Eastern Regional Centre, North-Eastern Regional Centre, North-Western Regional Centre,Northern Regional Centre, Southern Regional Centre, Western Regional Centre), 30 Research Institutes in different regions in India.
